The Oregonian has this story on the revival of the Equal Rights Amendment:

Sponsors of the Oregon Equal Rights Amendment have gathered more than 155,000 signatures and continue to collect more.

The campaign needs to submit 116,284 valid signatures by July 3 for the initiative to qualify for the Nov. 4 ballot. The campaign expects to hear back soon from the Oregon Secretary of State's Office as to whether signatures submitted by May 23 will be enough to qualify for the ballot.

Until then, signature gatherers continue to be out in force.

If you're a registered Oregon voter, you can sign and turn in a single-serving petition to include the ERA on the November ballot. If you haven't signed a petition yet, let me encourage you to sign the single-serving petition ASAP and mail it in. July third is just a few weeks away.

Meanwhile, the ERA is moving forward in Illinois, thirty-plus years after Governor Thompson helped to kill it.

There is no guarantee that the ERA will become part of the Constitution after 38 states ratify it. The ERA of the late 1970s had a deadline of 1979, which was later extended to 1982. Congress can remove that deadline. Of course, Congress has to want to remove that deadline. Even then, we'll almost certainly see a court challenge. So, this isn't going to be easy. But it's about time it's done.
