After a truly pathetic attempt to regain control of the East, Ukrainian forces have pushed into the Eastern city of Slovyansk where pro-Russian demonstrators had seized control of government buildings. Five are dead. Russia is threatening to retaliate. Ukrainian interim Foreign Minister Andrii Deshchytsia's response is that Ukraine is ready to fight Russia.

By the way --- Ukraine sold off their best weapons systems for cash systematically over the last couple of decades. So, no, they're not ready to fight Russia.

I give Ukraine six weeks.

Not Alexy Navalny, of course. He was illegally put under house arrest last week, and is therefore unable to continue blogging. However, the [livejournal.com profile] navalny LiveJournal has activated a contingency plan to continue blogging about Putin administration corruption, even in the face of possible war.

Stay tuned!

  • Russia has proposed a system that hands Syria's chemical weapons over to the UN. I've been saying that Assad is Russia's puppet and we should let Russia handle him. Well, Russia's handling him. We should support Russia, instead of trying to send a message to Iran.

  • George Zimmerman appears to have dodged the proverbial bullet again, this time in his domestic dispute with his wife. Let me state once again that the pro-Second Amendment community should disavow this asshole. He's a damned lucky moron, but he's a moron nonetheless, and any support for him will continue to backfire in increasingly worse ways.

  • Time Magazine on the importance - the absolutely critical importance - of [livejournal.com profile] navalny's campaign for Mayorship of Moscow to the future of Russian democracy, here.

  • I just finished Liber AL vel Legis: The Book of the Law. An Examination of Liber XXXI and Liber CCXX. I have to say that the Gillis essay on the Kill/Fill discussion is compelling. It's almost compelling enough to make me change my mind that the edit violates Aiwass's commandment to "change not the style of the letter." Almost. I hope every local body takes the time to put this on their shelves.

  • FaceBook is trying to one-up Twitter. I wish they would try to one-up LiveJournal, such as by letting you print your FB as a PDF book. LiveJournal has had that capability for over a decade.

  • This Kickstarter for Spiri - a cheap, autonomous, programmable quadrocopter - is almost at it's $125,000 goal. I supported it at the "I get a robot!" level. If you're a tech geek, then you should back it too!

  • Panamanian officials have arrested a CIA station chief who is wanted in Italy for the disappearance of an Imam in Milan in 2003. To be honest, I'm surprised that more people haven't been arrested for our shenanigans during the War On Terror. Not to mention, by the way, the Cold War.....

  • Opponents of Texas's anti-abortion law promise to file a lawsuit to strike down the law. Of course they do - and here's what will happen. The law will be stricken by the courts as a blatant violation of Roe and Webster. Texas will appeal. Several appeals later, we will have a Federal Court of Appeals precedent that can be used in other states. Eventually, two appellate courts will disagree, and SCOTUS will have to take up the question of whether the states can ban elective abortion after 20 weeks (which they most certainly can, per Roe) and whether they can make it practically illegal for clinics to operate. That second question has the pro-choice movement scared to death. If I had to guess right now, the present court would rule 5 to 4 that the states cannot put onerous regulations on abortion clinics - but that depends on Kennedy.

  • Anti-Putin blogger turned Russian opposition leader [livejournal.com profile] navalny is free while his conviction is under appeal after intense international pressure. Unsurprisingly, he has posted about it (awful translation).

  • I slowed down political blogging on LiveJournal after 2008, as my long-time readers know. My reasons for doing this were twofold: first everybody had moved to FaceBook, and second, DailyKos was doing a much better job than I could. Well, both of those factors have changed. In the case of FaceBook, I have come to the realization that excessive posting of interesting articles, memes, and so on, is actually really annoying and not condusive to keeping up my relationships with friends and family. In the case of DailyKos, it's because most of the good bloggers have either left for greener pastures or been driven away by mob mentality, and the rest have descended into mindless cheerleading for the Obama administration. We deserve better than that.

  • By the way, many of these same criticisms apply to MSNBC.

  • Tonight, Mandarose (2) premieres. My friend C was the assistant director for this project, and has a cameo as well. I worked on this project as a PA, and through that made friends with both Josie Newhall and Mandy Anderson. Tonight's showing is sold out, but there's a second one on July 24th. Hope you can make it!

Russian opposition leader [livejournal.com profile] navalny was convicted of embezzlement charges and sentenced to five years' incarceration after what is widely regarded as a rigged trial. Quoting the BBC:

A spokesperson for the EU's top foreign policy official, Catherine Ashton, said the embezzlement charges were unsubstantiated, and that Navalny's jailing posed "serious questions as to the state of the rule of law in Russia".

French foreign ministry spokesman Philippe Lalliot added his concern, but said: "We note that not all judicial remedies have been exhausted and that the sentence could be reviewed on appeal."

Navalny's supporters in Moscow have vowed to stage protests against the verdict later on Thursday.

Navalny himself has urged his supporters to keep fighting (Original in Russian).

A year ago - December 27, 2011 - I gave my predictions for what would happen in 2012. Unlike most other political pundits, however, I score myself on my predictions a year later.

My predictions for last year were:

  1. Barack Obama will be re-elected to a second term as President.

  2. John Boehner will be ousted as Speaker of the House.

  3. Democrats will just barely hold on to the US Senate

  4. The US unemployment rate will dip below 8%.

  5. The European Union will hold on .. barely.

  6. Inflation will remain below 10%.

  7. Protest movements in the US, Russia, Europe and MENA will accelerate.

  8. The US will substantially reduce its troop presence in Afghanistan.

  9. Oregon will win the Rose Bowl.

Let's see how I did!

[livejournal.com profile] navalny is being prosecuted for embezzlement in what looks like, and smells like, an attempt on Putin's part to censor an outspoken opponent of his administration.

Quoting the NYT:

Accelerating the Kremlin’s campaign against the country’s fledgling opposition, Russian investigators charged the blogger and anticorruption activist Aleksei Navalny on Tuesday with embezzlement, a crime that carries a sentence of up to 10 years. A previous case against him based on the same events was closed this spring in Kirov by prosecutors who said they had not found evidence of wrongdoing.

Chances are the prosecution will make their case - they almost always do, apparently, whether they have one or not - and that Navalny will get seven years. And Putin will silence a voice of dissent, again.

Of course, such a thing could never happen here, could it Mr. Siegelman?
