I admit that, when I was a kid, I would put the occasional quarter in the Salvation Army bucket. You'll never see me give them a penny as an adult.

It's not just their tacit homophobia. It's also that they refused to help a friend of SC's because said friend "looked too goth."

On the other hand, I saw first hand the work the Red Cross does towards disaster relief, when they helped Katrina survivors relocate to Portland and elsewhere. That's why they get my holiday charitable donation money, and have since 2005.

You can donate to the American Red Cross here.

Althought the Red Cross really needs to put the "Have you ever been deployed" as the one of the first few questions and not 30 out of 30 given how it disqualifies you in most cases.

I have had some pretty annoying experience with the RC too. They aren't perfect by any means. And two words: Liddy Dole.

I continue to be impressed by the extent to which the Salvation Army has completely hornswoggled the American public into the idea that they are primarily a charitable society, rather than a militant ultra-Protestant sect with a history of recruiting the disenfranchised. I mean, which of the two words Salvation Army is unclear?

Is it that they run thrift shops? Or that they have people ring bells over kettles in December? I just don't get it.

It's because there are Salvation Army outlets where no other charity will go (not even Good Will).

Uh, by "outlet" (comparable to Good Will) you mean thrift shop, right? A way for them to raise money "where no other ... will go"?

Yes and no, because there's the thrift shop part and where they also give employment assistance, give foodstuffs, and lots of clothing away.
