CHEERS to Split Decisions! That's what the Iowa GOP are calling the results of the Iowa Caucuses, after the final tally showed Rick Santorum beating Mitt Romney by 34 votes. Not that it matters much for the delegate count - they each get six - but it does matter for bragging rights. If the media are really concerned about accuracy in reporting, they'll stop talking about Romney's so-called "Iowa victory" right about now.

JEERS to Hollywood. After their pathetic rant yesterday about how Wikipedia and other sites were "abusing their power," they then went about flexing their own power - telling President Obama that, because he refuses to defend SOPA, he's not getting their money anymore.

Yes, they really think they can buy a President. This is why Occupy Wall Street exists.

By the way, JEERS to Former Senator Chris Dodd for putting his signature on that letter. Shame on you, Senator.

CHEERS to the ongoing Arab Spring, now beginning its second year. The latest, including the developing civil war in Syria and continued repression of liberal activists by Army thugs in Egypt, can be seen here. By the way, the Syria thing is turning into a big freaking deal in US-Russian relations, with Russia sending weapons to support the Assad regime and warning the West against military intervention. The two countries have had very warm relations for decades, and Western (read: US-led) intervention could be seen as a threat to Russian credibility, the same way the 2008 Russian invasion of Georgia was seen as a threat to American credibility. WWIII won't break out over this, but the already teetering "reboot" of US-Russian relations might very well be dead.

CHEERS to Ginger Strivelli, the neo-pagan North Carolina mom who's challenging her school district's policy on handing out religious literature. Quoting The Houston Chronicle:

Ginger Strivelli's fifth-grade son last month brought home a Bible given away at North Windy Ridge school, but when she offered free copies of books explaining her pagan faith on Wednesday she was told administrators were not accepting any religious materials while they review current policies.

"I'm not surprised a bit. That's fully what I expected," Strivelli said.

Yup.

What are you Cheering and Jeering today?

So....if the Arab Spring ends up making a bunch of Islamist countries....does it still get cheers?

The Iranian Revolution was kind of like a predecessor to the Arab Spring (but yeah I know...not Arab), and look where that ended up.

Egypt is worrisome.

That would be socialism! (gasp)

The Iranian Revolution was to overthrow a U.S. backed dictator put in because the UK and the US couldn't allow their previously (and quite democratically) elected President to threaten nationalization of ARAMACO assets unless more profits from oil from Iran go to (gasp) the Iranians.

So we (the U.S.) have no one to blame the Iranian Revolution on but ourselves. Of course the U.S. is good at propping up people like the Shah, or Pinochet, or Pinnochet, or Duvalier, or Noriega or Bush II.

Not sure what the socialism comment means?

And you're missing my point about the Iranian revolution.....when left to make their own choices, they became a nation run on Sharia law with radical Islam at the helm.

Don't care who they overthrew. My point is the aftermath....not the reasons why.

You know what, that has got to be the stupidest thing I have heard/read in a long time. The WHO they overthrew was BECAUSE of the WHY. They didn't overthrow the dictator because they WANTED a sharia government, it was a group of theocrats who had the best organization out of all the discontented groups. I'm sure if a group of LGBT militants where the most efficient then Iran would be all Takei and groovy.

As for the socialism comment, the main rationale the UK used to entice the US into helping them was 'nationalizing' the ARAMCO facilities sounds like socialism to your Cold War Americans. Never mind that most of Europe is socialist. If this guy is turning socialist then by God he might go Communist next! Never mind that the only thing your average Islamic nation wanted from the Soviets was weapons and grain, the idea they would want to become part of the whole International Communist Conspiracy(tm) was typical American stupidity about not understanding how other countries and cultures think. Something I think you post shows in spades.

Also, you comments show American arrogance again, "...when left to make their own choice." Yes they made their OWN choice. Unlike when we made our own choice to intervene and oust their democratically elect President who made a decision for the betterment of his own country which just happened to be something we didn't like.

We had the might so we felt we had the right, yes?

Plus your comments also show you don't know squat about the real Iran. The REAL Iran is filled with a middle class which is chafing at the restrictions the Mullahs put on them. It is the bulk of Iranians who defy the bans and use the internet to help keep Iran tied to the global world. Yet it is people like you who seem to think we in the West need to "help" them and thus give their own home grown dictators more cause to keep cracking down in the name of "security"

Yep, every time someone like Bush or Ahmadinejad need a boost at home, all they need to do is point to the other and say how much they are a threat all the while cracking down on dissent.

My cheers & Jeers

I'm cheering the Oatmeal. Once again he's like a online, updated version of George Carlin: able to show the stupidity of others through pointed humor.

My jeers go out to TV news: do you really need to send some poor schmuck out into the snow/cold/rain Live to prove how bad it is? I mean isn't that what Doppler 8000 is for?

From the article on the MPAA and SOPA:

[...] it's awfully brazen of the MPAA to accuse the sites of inhibiting access to information when SOPA is essentially a pro-censorship bill.

This is exactly what I was going to say in response, but a lot more eloquent.
