Blogger Raging Chicken Press has the details of yesterday's Mitt Romney no-show:

Mitt Romney was supposed to kick off his “jobs and economy” bus tour at a Quakertown Wawa earlier today, but he decided to skip the scheduled event. About 400 – 500 people had gathered to greet the Republican presidential candidate – but about half of those were anti-Romney. Demonstrations in opposition to Romney were called by former Governor Ed Rendell and Fight for Philly. Romney decided to double down on Ed Rendell’s new book title, A Nation of Wusses, and skip being confronted by demonstrators, opting instead for lunch with Wawa executives. But before I go much further, I’ve got to remark that it’s really ironic that Romney wanted to kick off a “jobs” tour at an establishment that offers low wage / minimum wage jobs inside a state with a Governor and legislature that is busting middle class union jobs in favor of low-wage jobs.

I'm reminded of a scene from the Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy series where Zaphod, realizing that discretion is the better part of valor, and cowardice the better part of discretion, bravely fled the scene.

I suppose it will back to loyalty oaths in to time, eh, Mitt?

Eight months of work has come to fruition:

ARCANUM BEASTIARUM
OF THE SUBTIL & OCCULT VIRTUES of DIVERS BEASTS

By Robert Fitzgerald
With original woodblock prints by Liv Rainey-Smith

Written in the great tradition of the medieval bestiaries, Robert Fitzgerald's long-awaited new work Arcanum Bestiarum re-imagines the animal menagerie in the context of bestial mystery and atavistic power. Written for the modern magical practitioner and zoophile, the volume examines the occult virtues and totemic majesties of fifty animals, theriomorphs, and their kindred. Correspondences with deific powers, atavistic wisdom, and mythopoetic emanation are examined, especially in light of the tutelary powers all animals possess.

The text is graced with fifty-five original woodcut illustrations by artist Liv Rainey-Smith, prepared especially for this title in close collaboration with the author. Amongst the more ambitious renderings in the work are the occult cryptofauna Homunculus, Manticore, Ouroboros, and Basilisk, as well as animals prominent in the ancient dawn of magick: the Bear, Goat, Viper, Peacock, and more. Completing the design elements is an original typeface designed for the work by calligrapher Gail Coppock, serving to illuminate this grimoire of the Magician’s Primal Eden.

The book is 272 pages, printed in two colour ink on heavy stock, and illustrated throughout. The book is available in two editions, limit one pre-order copy of each edition per customer.

Standard Edition: cloth hardcover, full colour dust jacket, limited to 1400 copies: $60

Deluxe Edition: full brown antique skiver, marbled end sheets, signed by the author, with a unique hand-numbered woodblock print by Liv Rainey-Smith created for this edition, limited to 49 copies: $385

Shipping: $10 per book, worldwide

For ordering information, go here.

Fifty wood block prints in less than a year is no small feat, kids, and SC and I are both delighted that this book is finally done and about to head out the door. If you want to keep up with more news and information on this and other Liv Rainey-Smith projects, I'd suggest going here or here.

We now return you to the usual political discussion.

  • Justin Raimondo on Rand Paul's betrayal of Ron Paul.

  • Looks like war is brewing between Christians and Muslims in Nigeria. More fall-out from the Libya war?

  • Via a friend comes this shocking report that the median household wealth is back where it was in 1989. This is almost entirely due to the fact that real estate values have nose-dived. For wealthier households - the kind of households that buy stocks and such - wealth has increased substantially. The Economist calls this a lesson in the importance of diversification - which is great as long as you forget that diversification is itself only possible with wealth. Who has money to buy stocks when you can't afford rent?

  • I didn't know that Balkan's Arcane Bindings existed until now. Must read.

  • What happened to the rule of the lone liberal blogger? Kos reflects on this here. There's also the fact that, really, the leftie bloggosphere is so interconnected now that the points are often being made better somewhere else. And then there's the fact that everyone's reading FaceBook instead of LiveJournal. (And get off my lawn!)

  • An Alabama high school recently decided to lift their ban on earrings on male students; MSNBC has asked, via FaceBook, whether this is a step in the right direction. For my money, the answer is "no." I'd rather see jewelry banned altogether, because I'm tired of the phenomenon of high-school-as-fashion-show. (On the other hand, I'm not necessarily fond of uniforms, either, since they don't really help kids' academic performance (2).)
