Wednesday Miscellany!
Jan. 8th, 2014 12:04 pm- Obama wants to repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force against Iraq. As it stands, he has Congressional authorization to re-invade Iraq at will.
- The US Senate is preparing to scuttle Obama's peace initiatives with Iran with a veto-proof bill imposing additional sanctions.
- In 1971, a group of activists broke into a Pennsylvania FBI office and found evidence that Hoover was actively working to suppress peaceful dissent. Today, one of them came forward to explain why they did this, and to draw a parallel to Snowden's actions. Quoting her: "Democracy needs whistleblowers."
- Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) is retiring, which is likely to make gun rights activists cheer. Me, I'm expecting for another anti-gun candidate to fill that seat, based on both the demographics of her district and the revival of the anti-gun cause in the Democratic base. Also retiring is Rep Mike McIntyre (D-NC), a blue dog who, among other things, is a staunch opponent of Obamacare. His seat is likely to go to Republican hands.
- The Insane Clown Posse and the ACLU are suing the FBI over the FBI's stupid, silly, and almost certainly illegal decision to classify ICP fans as a gang.
- USA Today has apologized for plagiarizing
scottbateman's Disalmanac weather map.

Date: 2014-01-08 08:08 pm (UTC)In regards to Iraq, the War Powers Act really needs to be fiddled with.
The FBI story is one of the main reasons why I constantly tell people that give gov't entities the "right" to spy on our enemies and you can bet almost immediately that anyone who has a view counter to the "established beltway wisdom" is suddenly an enemy no matter if they are a group like Cute Kittens Against Nuclear Warfare.
