"Well, guess who's got a giant gun owner database," crows the Daily Kos diary, wherein TriSec proclaims that the NRA's member database is a giant list of gun owners.

Well, kinda.

The chances of an NRA member being a gun owner is pretty high.

The chances that a gun owner is an NRA member is actually pretty low, because membership is not a condition for gun ownership. My father in law, for example, was never an NRA member. And, as the progressives were keen on celebrating once, a lot of gun owners are in the same boat. In fact, a lot of gun owners quit the NRA because they don't go far enough.

So, yeah, the diary is a real stretch at best. I'd go so far as to say that it's illogical and stupid. There was a time when a diary like this would have been laughed at and derided by the "reality-based community." Today, it not only made the rec list, but it got reposted on DK's FaceBook page.

We can see the plane falling from the sky. We can see it trailing smoke. I'm wondering when we'll see it impact and explode.

Mike, did you see that the NRA's database isn't just members? It's every source for gun owners they can beg, borrow, or buy (like, for example, trying to buy lists of concealed carry permit owners). Your father in law might yet be in their database.

Outrage is for other people. I find it hilarious that escaped mental patient Wayne La Pierre is quoted as freaking out that any database of gun owners is a risk to gun owners because of teh hackerz or some media somewhere getting it and deciding to publish it. Yours too, sport.
