Who lost the week?
Jan. 11th, 2013 05:27 pmAs far as I'm concerned, the week has one, and only one, loser: Alex Jones, whose horrifyingly magnetic insanity was on display for all to witness on CNN. The fact that he made Piers Morgan look sane says it all. He probably did more to contribute to the cause of gun control than anyone else so far - indeed, I can imagine that a lot of gun owners watched him at work, threw their hands up, said "fuck it," and melted their guns down themselves. (Not I - I still hold out hope that a sane, workable solution will prevail. But I'm also a Cubs fan.)
But, we must still mention other candidates for losers. Notre Dame comes particularly to mind - the number one team in the country, according to BCS, was spectacularly crushed Monday night by the number two Alabama Crimson Tide. It wasn't even close. And it does make the case that the FBS system is garbage, even with a championship bowl. We have a playoff system come 2015, but will it be enough?
Also a dishonorable mention: Brent Musburger. No, not for pointing out that Ms. Katherine Webb, currently the girlfriend of Alabama starting quarterback A J McCarron, is just insanely hot; or for pointing out that Mr. McCarron's mother, Dee Dee Bonner, is also insanely hot; but for implying that the quarterback is apparently entitled to an insanely hot girlfriend. There's just all sorts of bad news there. And let's not get into the implication about the QB being entitled to an insanely hot mom, either. Not unless we want to start talking about Theban kings.
The Seattle Mariners also deserve mention, for pissing off Seattle sports fans. How? By objecting to the Sacramento Kings moving into "their market." Really, I don't see what the problem is. The Mariners are baseball; the Kings are basketball; and basketball is basically just the sad table scraps that fill the space between the Super Bowl and Spring Training anyway. But the Mariners don't need the bad press.
Another dishonorable mention goes to Rep. Phil Gingrey, M.D., R-Ga, suffering from an acute and serious case of podophagia (foot in mouth disease). His claim to infamy: stating that Todd Akin probably had a point about a woman's body shutting that whole thing down. The really sad part is that he'll probably keep his job for as long as he wants it. Nobody is going to lose a Republican primary election by being too far to the right.
Finally, it behooves us to mention the dishonor of KPOJ, the once progressive talk station of Portland, Oregon, that last November underwent a format change. Gone were Ed Schultz, Thom Hartmann, Randi Rhodes, Karl Wolfman, and other great progressive talkers. In its stead, Fox Sports, with a focus on Oregon State. KPOJ's reward for this treachery? A 0.2 share. If you're keeping score, note that that's one-seventh of the still not so great 1.4 share that they were pulling before the format change. One hopes that their bad performance will continue until they change their minds and put progressive radio back on KPOJ. Then again, this nation's business executives aren't exactly known for being the smartest ever.
