Jan 10 2012 CHEERS and JEERS
Jan. 10th, 2012 04:33 pmCHEERS to soft naval deplomacy. While Iran's Ahmadinejad blusters and spits, and his government convicts so-called CIA agents in show trials, the US navy has been embarrassing the crap out of them. How? Why, by doing what the Iranian navy has been unable, or unwilling, to do: rescue Iranian citizens from pirates. As uses of military force go, this one is absolutely brilliant. It gives the US the moral upper hand and makes the Iranian case impossible even in official Iranian eyes. More of this, please.
JEERS to Representatives Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) and Darrel Issa (R-CA) for the Research Works Act, which would reverse a long-standing policy that NIH-funded research has to be available to the public within 12 months of publication. This bill would slow down basic research - for which we the taxpayers are paying - for the benefit of a few publishing companies ... companies that have given Maloney and Issa tens of thousands in campaign contributions. It's a dumb bill and it should die in a fire. Unfortunately, neither Maloney nor Issa are likely to lose their jobs in 2012.
