Yes, he really said that. Check it out:

(If you get the "video no longer available" bug, try this.)

I guess he might have a point if Iraq weren't (A) on the other side of the globe; (B) soaking up just an enormous amount of money, fuel, personnel, and other critical resources, at levels that cannot be sustained; (C) actually, no kidding, killing our troops at a steady rate, in contrast to South Korea and other such posts; (D) decreasing our ability to respond to emergencies at home and abroad; (E) an incredible drain on morale for all sorts of reasons, and (F) insisting, on every level from the government to the people marching in the streets, that we please leave now. But, I guess we don't deserve that kind of change.

Someone needs to strap this man to a chair and force him to watch "Groundhog Day" over and over again for a week solid with no sleep. Then he might get the main point of why it's necessary to bring our troops home sooner rather than later.

Quoting Reuters:

The United States will tell a July meeting of the Group of Eight rich nations that it cannot meet big cuts in emissions of planet-warming gases by 2020, its chief climate negotiator Harlan Watson said.

"It's frankly not do-able for us," he told Reuters on Tuesday, referring to a goal for rich countries to curb greenhouse gases by 25-40 percent by 2020 compared to 1990 levels.

It's a nice dodge, isn't it? If you don't agree with a goal, just say it's too hard to meet.

Kos calls this the Can't Do Spirit.

I think it's more of that Change We Deserve.

Bush is asking for a moment of remembrance for our veterans.

Yes, this is the same guy who's threatening to veto any bill that pays for the benefits that we promised to Veterans three generations ago.

I guess that's more of the change we deserve.

More news from the Bush administration about what kind of Change we Deserve.

We Deserve protection for Polar Bears:

Polar bears will now be listed as "threatened" under the Endangered Species Act. --CNN

But no Changes to the thing that's, you know, killing the Polar Bears.

But in announcing the listing, Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne said the decision should not be "misused" to regulate global climate change.

"Listing the polar bear as threatened can reduce avoidable losses of polar bears. But it should not open the door to use of the Endangered Species Act to regulate greenhouse gas emissions from automobiles, power plants, and other sources," said Kempthorne.

"That would be a wholly inappropriate use of the ESA law. The ESA is not the right tool to set U.S. climate policy."

While there are an estimated 20,000 to 25,000 polar bears now in the Arctic, scientists from the U.S. Geological Survey predict two thirds of the world's polar bears will disappear in the next 50 years because of a decline in Arctic sea ice.

Controversy over the status of the polar bear is tied to the fact that this is the first time a species has been considered for listing specifically because its habitat is threatened by global warming. --CNN

So this poster can't come out of retirement just yet.

From DailyKos:

Larry Craig, who really ought not to be doing anything involving stripping, has an amendment to strip the Webb GI bill from the war supplemental.

Meaning, Craig wants no more money for the government to meet its GI Bill obligations. Meaning, among other things, we still won't have enough money to give our vets the college money we promised them.

I guess that's not the kind of change we deserve.

Update Another change we don't deserve? The Drunk actually giving up golf like he said he did. I know, shocking, right?

[livejournal.com profile] flavobean blogged about this yesterday:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President George W. Bush said on Tuesday he quit playing golf in 2003 out of respect for the families of Americans killed in the war in Iraq.

"I don't want some mom whose son may have recently died to see the Commander-in-Chief playing golf," Bush said in an interview with Yahoo and Politico.com.

"I feel I owe it to the families to be as -- to be in solidarity as best as I can with them. And I think playing golf during a war just sends the wrong signal," he said.

Oh yeah, nothing puts you in solidarity with people slogging through the hot desert with an unreliable rifle and 50 lbs of gear, surrounded by people who may or may not be enemies, on The War That Never Ends, like giving up golf.

Nothing puts you in solidarity with the dead, the soldier with a missimg limb, the soldier with a brain injury, and the soldier with PTSD like giving up golf.

The people die in the wars these idiots start, and the idiots think giving up golf somehow makes them morally okay. That must be more of that Change You Deserve that they're campaigning on.

Addendum: [livejournal.com profile] arkham4269 informs me that the M4 is a reliable rifle and that the amount of gear is closer to 75-150#. Fair enough, although I'm still somewhat wary of the M4. I'll have a chance to do a proper test soon.

The GOP have announced their new slogan for the 2008 campaign:

The Change You Deserve

Huh. Well, aside from being a ripoff of both Barack Obama and an antidepressant medication, this is just a terrible slogan for these guys. Consider what they did during the last eight years, four of them with almost total power. Do you really want to tell the voters that they deserve more of that?

I mean, think of the associations they might make:

Yeah, see, that just doesn't work. Maybe they should try another slogan, like, "we promise, we won't fuck up quite as bad this time, really."
